How It Works

Once installed, AI AutoClean appears in the Word ribbon. Simply open any document and click the AI AutoClean button to apply automated cleaning and formatting. The add‑in analyses the document, highlights potential changes and will apply improvements with one keypress.

The add‑in requires a valid license key and the email address used during purchase. Once activated, all features are unlocked and ready to use.

Installation Guide

AI AutoClean can be installed directly from the Microsoft Marketplace.

When you purchased your license, you will have received an email containing your unique 16‑digit license key. You will need this key along with the email address used during purchase to activate the add‑in.

Step 1

Select the Add-ins Icon from the Microsoft Word Ribbon. Select +More Add-ins from the bottom of that screen.

Step 2

Search in the Microsoft App Source for 'AI AutoClean', highlight and Select 'Install'.

Step 3

Click either the new green AI Logo in the Ribbon, or if not displayed click the 3 Horzontal dots next to the Add-ins Icon and select 'AI AutoClean

Your Add-in is now loaded.

Step 4 - Activate Your License

Click the 'Activate Button'. You will be prompted to enter:

• Your activation key
• Your email address (the one used when ordering)

Once both fields are entered, click Activate. Your license will be validated and the add‑in will unlock all features.

Understanding License Status

The activation window displays a Status field. This indicates the current state of your license:

• Active / Valid - Your license is valid and fully enabled.
• Expired - Your subscription has ended; renew to continue using the add‑in.
• Pending - The license key was entered but email confirmation is required.
• Invalid - The key or email does not match a valid license.

If your status does not update immediately, close and reopen Word.

Troubleshooting Installation

• If the add‑in does not appear, restart Word after installation.
• If your organization restricts add-ins, contact your IT administrator.
• If activation fails, ensure the email matches the one used during purchase.

Licensing

To activate your software, enter the email address used during purchase along with your license code. After submitting the form, your license will be validated and the application will unlock the features included in your plan.

• Email Address - the email used when purchasing the software
• License Code - the activation code provided after checkout

License Types

Single‑User License

Intended for individual users. Activation is valid for one device. Suitable for personal use or a single workstation.

Team License

Designed for teams or departments. Each license covers the number of devices purchased. For example, a 5‑seat license allows activation on 5 devices.

Enterprise License

Ideal for larger organizations. Provides unlimited device activations within the organization, along with priority support options.

Enterprise Deployment - AI AutoClean

AI AutoClean can be deployed organization-wide by an IT administrator using the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. Once deployed, the add-in appears automatically in Word for all assigned users - no individual installation required.

Requirements

• Microsoft 365 Business (Basic, Standard or Premium) or Enterprise (E1/E3/E5/F3) licenses
• Users must be signed into Office with their organizational ID
• Exchange Online with active mailboxes required
• Admin must have Global Admin or Exchange Admin role

Method 1 - Deploy from Microsoft Marketplace (Recommended)

Once AI AutoClean is listed in Microsoft Marketplace, IT admins can find and deploy it directly from the Admin Center without downloading any files.

Step 1

Log in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center at https://admin.microsoft.com

Step 2

In the left menu go to Settings → Integrated Apps

Step 3

Click Get apps and search for AI AutoClean. Select it and click Get it now.

Step 4

Select who to deploy to — Everyone, Specific users or groups, or Just me for testing.

Step 5

Click Deploy. The add-in will appear in Word for assigned users within 24–72 hours. Users may need to restart Word.

Method 2 — Deploy via Manifest File

Download the manifest file and deploy it directly via the Admin Center.

Download the AI AutoClean manifest file from aiautoclean.com/manifest

Log in to admin.microsoft.com and go to Settings → Integrated Apps

Step 3

Click Add-ins near the top of the page, then Deploy Add-in → Next → Upload Custom Apps

Step 4

Click Choose File and upload the manifest XML file.

Step 5

Select who to deploy to and click Deploy. The add-in will appear in Word within 24–72 hours.

License Activation

An Enterprise License covers unlimited users within your organization. You receive a single license key which users enter alongside their work email address on first use.

Single User License

For one individual user.

Team License

Covers a defined number of users. Ideal for departments or small teams.

Enterprise License

Unlimited activations across your entire organization. Recommended for school-wide or company-wide deployment.

Campus / Institutional Licensing

Updates

Updates deployed via Marketplace are applied automatically. If deployed via manifest file, upload the updated manifest when a new version is released. Enterprise customers are notified by email when updates are available.

Removing the Add-in

Go to Settings → Integrated Apps in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, find AI AutoClean and select Delete. The add-in will be removed from all assigned users within 24 hours.

Resetting the Office Add‑in Cache (WEF Folder)

Disclaimer: Clearing the Office add‑in cache is an advanced troubleshooting step. It may reset cached data, license information, and settings for AI AutoClean and other Office add‑ins. This action should only be performed when necessary. We do not accept responsibility for any impact on other add‑ins or user configurations resulting from deleting the WEF folder.

Important Warnings

• License information will be cleared - AI AutoClean will require users to re‑enter their email and license key after the reset.
• All Office add‑ins are affected - Other add‑ins may also lose cached data or require re‑authentication.
• No documents or personal files are deleted, but cached add‑in data is fully reset.
• This step should be used only as a last resort when other troubleshooting methods have failed.

When It Is Appropriate to Clear the WEF Folder

• The add‑in loads as a blank white panel
• The add‑in does not update even after reinstalling the manifest
• An old version of the add‑in continues to appear
• The add‑in fails to load with no error message
• Word is using a corrupted cached copy of the add‑in

These issues are typically caused by Office loading outdated or corrupted cached files instead of retrieving the latest version.

How to Clear the WEF Cache

Close all Office applications, then delete the following folder:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Wef

After deleting the folder, reopen Word. The add‑in will reload fresh files and prompt for license activation again.

When You Should NOT Clear the WEF Folder

• If the add‑in is working normally
• If the issue relates to license activation errors
• If the problem is caused by organization policy restrictions
• If Word is not updated or the user is not signed in

Resetting the cache is a last‑resort step for resolving loading or display issues that cannot be fixed through normal installation or activation troubleshooting.

Installation & Setup

How do I install AI AutoClean?

The easiest way is to install directly from Microsoft Marketplace. Open Word, go to Home → Add-ins → Get Add-ins, search for AI AutoClean and click Add. The add-in will appear in your Word ribbon immediately.

Why doesn't 'Get Add-ins' appear in Word?

This usually happens when Office is not signed in, not activated, or restricted by your organization's policy. It may also occur on older or unpatched versions of Office 2016. Contact your IT administrator if add-ins are blocked by your organization.

Does AI AutoClean work on Office 2016?

Yes, but Office 2016 must be fully updated. Older builds may not support modern add-ins or the Office.js features AI AutoClean requires.

Do I need administrator rights to install the add-in?

No. AI AutoClean installs through Word's built-in add-in system and does not require administrator permissions for individual installation.

The add-in does not appear after installation. What should I do?

Close and restart Word completely. If it still doesn't appear, go to Home → Add-ins → My Add-ins and check it is listed there. If your organization manages Office centrally, contact your IT administrator.

How do I update to the latest version?

If installed from Microsoft Marketplace, updates are applied automatically. No action is required.

Where do I find my license key?

Your license key is included in your purchase confirmation email. If you cannot find it, check your spam folder or contact support.

How do I activate my license?

When you open AI AutoClean for the first time, click Activate License, enter your email address and license key, then click Activate.

Can I move my license to a new computer?

Yes. Simply install AI AutoClean on your new device and activate it using the same email address and license key.

Why does it say my license is invalid?

This usually means the email address does not match the one used during purchase, or the license key was mistyped. Check both carefully. If the problem continues, contact support.

How many devices can I activate?

• Single User License - 1 device
• Team License - number of seats purchased
• Enterprise License - unlimited devices within the organization

Can I upgrade my license later?

Yes. Contact support to upgrade from Single User to Team or Enterprise licensing.

Can I try AI AutoClean before buying?

Yes. Click Start Free Trial when you first open the add-in. You get 3 free document cleans with no license required.

Using AI AutoClean

Where do I find the AI AutoClean button?

After installation, the AI AutoClean icon appears in the Word Home ribbon. Click it to open the add-in panel.

What does AI AutoClean actually fix?

AI AutoClean removes common AI writing traits including long dashes (—), medium dashes (–), curly quotes, ellipsis characters, double spaces, incorrect punctuation spacing, and overused AI phrases — all in one click.

Does AI AutoClean modify my original document?

Yes, but all changes can be undone immediately using Word's standard Undo function (Ctrl+Z). You can also save a copy before cleaning if preferred.

Does it support Track Changes?

Yes. AI AutoClean works with Track Changes enabled. Edits will appear as tracked revisions so you can review each change.

Does it work on OneDrive or SharePoint documents?

Yes. AI AutoClean works on local, OneDrive and SharePoint documents.

Does AI AutoClean work offline?

Document cleaning works entirely on your PC with no data sent anywhere. An internet connection is only required for license validation on first activation.

Privacy & Security

Does AI AutoClean send my document to any server?

No. Your document never leaves your computer. All cleaning is performed locally within Word on your own PC. Nothing is uploaded, stored or transmitted.

Is AI AutoClean GDPR compliant?

Yes. Because no document content is ever sent to external servers, AI AutoClean presents no GDPR risk for document processing. Only your email address and license key are handled during activation.

Does the add-in require internet access?

Only for license activation. Once activated, document cleaning works entirely offline on your local machine.

Which versions of Word does AI AutoClean support?

AI AutoClean works on Microsoft 365, Office 2021, Office 2019, and fully updated Office 2016, on both Windows and Mac.

Does AI AutoClean work on Mac?
